How to take the pressure off of Home School

homeschool life learning pressure off stress free

Dear mama,

You’re probably thinking, “Taking the pressure off of home school?!” yeah okay…But I’m serious! Let’s rewind a bit. When I decided I was going to homeschool my oldest daughter for Kindergarten, I was very excited and felt confident! The school year began and I felt it was going great…But then this little test showed the words “Pregnant”. Things started to fall apart. My great routine that was established for the month was ruined by a lack of energy, mood swings, and the list goes on.

So many moms out there start with a great routine but LIFE gets in the way and they are left feeling defeated. I know I did… I was so discouraged. I tried downloading apps to help with her learning, which she loved at first but it didn’t stick.

Fast forward a year later. She begins school and of course they say “Lacie is behind in her reading and we really think she should begin tutoring after school” I’m thinking “Great….I’m the worst mom ever!” We read often together at home, she was busy in tutoring and I thought this is definitely going to help.

It wasn’t until I heard about “Life learning” that I began realizing I was going about things all wrong.

Let me explain… Do you remember in school when your teacher made you read a chapter in a history book and you had to give a quiz about it? Or maybe a certain way to accomplish a math problem…You failed miserably.

Now do you remember when you read this awesome book you couldn’t put down and you gave a perfect book report? Why did you nail it?

Children only remember what they have interest in. We were all made with different abilities. Like most schools, they test kids at the end of every year to make sure they are progressing in every subject. Children may be able to recite something they’ve learned within the past few weeks, but if you were to test these children on something they learned a year ago, I can bet they would fail…UNLESS it was something they had fun learning or it spoke to their heart

I began reading and reading, and then reading some more. It’s like everything made sense suddenly.

This is what I did…Lacie finished her year of first grade in public school. I began to “Teach” a week before the school year was over. I took her to goodwill and showed her the chapter books section. She chose 5 Junie B. jones books. I know she had a difficult time reading so I told her once she finished reading all 5 I would take her to buy more! She was eager! That same week she finished her very first chapter book! Of course children begin to get bored…so eventually I had to put in her schedule to read for 20 minutes every day. We were taking extra time to have her read. She likes this vintage game called “Animal crossing” and it involves a lot of reading. She would ask me what it says and at first I would help her but then I realized she needs to know what the instructions are for this video game to play on…so she was determined to read it by herself when I could not just drop what I was doing to come read the next step…It’s little things like that, that have improved her reading so quickly.

If you look at your child’s entire day and watch their abilities and interests you will see how their natural learning process is growing. Children learn best from playing, exploring, and pretending. We sometimes play “Store” and she counts out the money to me, Boom! MATH! + Mom point! Ha-ha.

We just have to change the way we see our child’s education. Children progress at different stages, naturally. In a lot of public schools, they try to fit children into a one size fits all way of learning. Some kids adapt beautifully to the public school way of learning. Which is awesome!

But I feel as if I was taught there’s only one way of learning and that is in public school, because it is all I have ever known. But when I was willing to branch out and research the way children learn, I really taught myself! There are so many categories of home school. There’s “Unschooling”, “Life Learning”, “Montessori”, “Charlotte Mason”. What I have done is taken a little bit of each and made our own way of homeschool according to our way of life. I have taught myself to let go of what society tells us is the correct way and ONLY way. I trust that my child will learn everything she needs to when the timing is right.

I did find good home school books with easy rip out pages and she completes 1-3 pages a day willingly because she helped me pick out which homeschool activity books she liked the best! This is just a way to make sure she is understanding simple learning. If she goes a day without doing these pages, I don’t stress it. They are just a guide for us. You can be in charge and decide how you want your child to learn. Like I said before they all learn differently.

These are life learning subject examples:

Grandma’s House – (Grandma is French) Foreign Language & Home economics

Our place of worship (Kingdom Hall) – History, Reading & Social studies

Grocery store – Reading & Math

Do you see how life naturally teaches our children? This has allowed me to trust the natural learning process. So it’s time to ditch that home school pressure, and take a deep breath.

Until next time,

Karissa

3 early pregnancy symptoms nobody talks about…

pregnancy photo symptoms complete

Dear Mama,

If you are already a mama or plan to become one, I have provided you some much needed signs that I have experienced myself with my past four pregnancies. These symptoms can be seen as soon as 3 days after conception!! Please remember I am no medical professional. These symptoms are merely based on my own experiences.

So many women keep their symptoms “hush-hush”, especially the ones they find revolting. Yes you may think these symptoms are “Gross” but if you really think about how amazing our bodies are to grow another living being inside of us, it will help us to remember how important the symptom is when it happens. There is a reason our body responds to conception! It means “THINGS ARE HAPPENING!” ha-ha…

  1. Brown Discharge

Some articles I had researched in the past spoke of implantation bleeding. What the heck is that?! Implantation bleeding is a vaginal discharge of blood during the early stages of pregnancy, when the fertilized egg implants to the uterus. Implantation is defined as the attachment of the fertilized egg (a cluster of cells called blastocyst) to the lining of the uterus.

Typically articles will say “You might notice a streak of light red blood in your underwear or on toilet paper” This is the most common appearance mentioned in conception articles.

I have never found this to be true with any of my pregnancies. Usually 2-4 days after we have conceived I will find dark brown discharge, similar to chocolate pudding inside the toilet bowl. It’s usually not a whole lot, and it usually lasts only a day or two.

  1. Cramping

Cramps are usually associated with a period. But they can be a symptom of early pregnancy! It can feel like a sharp pain or milder cramping because the uterus is stretching. Cramps from implantation usually mean the egg is securing itself to the uterus. Each of my pregnancies I experienced cramping early on as soon as a day after conception! My last pregnancy with the twins was awful cramping! Probably because I had not one, but two eggs attaching!! OUCH! {Thank you husband} ha-ha

  1. Mood swings with exhaustion

There is a whole lot of partying going on inside your uterus right now! So it’s normal to experience exhaustion or fatigue. In turn, you will feel grumpy! My poor husband and daughter were hating life when we conceived with the twins. LOTS of hormones early on! It all started around the first week of conception!

You’re probably thinking to yourself, shoot! I need a pregnancy test stat! That is what I was thinking anyway…My last two pregnancies, I used only clear blue digital pregnancy tests and this is why….You can test as early as 5 days before your missed period. These tests are 99% accurate. I love that the positive or negative is in word form instead of “TRYING” to make yourself see a line that may not even be there…but your brain is sure it sees something right?! Ha-ha been there… My favorite part of these tests is it gives you an estimate of how far along you are depending on your levels of HCG hormones! Isn’t that awesome?! If you are interested in trying it out, here is a few links to easily get them in your hand and in your pee stream! Ha-ha

7 Toxic Free Baby Products I would not survive without!

This post may contain affiliate links.

Dear Mama,

I was in target… (Like most of you, don’t lie…) ha-ha…I was trying to decide what brand of wipes to get. I wondered what do they put in wipes anyway. As I was skimming these ingredients I kept thinking in my mind “Nope! Don’t know what that is, or that one, or that one…and so on and so on…So I bought it because of my lack of time away from the babies. Later on I decided again, “I’m going to research these ingredients I don’t know…” I was in complete shock!! These companies are allowing people to wipe their baby’s butts with these toxic chemicals?! What in the world?!? For just a glimpse of insight, here’s just to name a few and what they could do to your child…

Systemic Phenoxyethanol  [Side effects of systemic phenoxyethanol (when given in doses typically larger than is seen in common vaccinations) are diarrhea, nausea, and vomitting, likely due to its antibacterial properties. Large doses are deadly]

Sodium Benzoate [Commonly reported side effects of sodium benzoate/sodium phenylacetate include: infection, respiratory tract disease, central nervous system disease, disorder of lymphatic system, hematologic disease, nutrition disorder, and vomiting.]

Dimethicone [Common side effects from dimethicone use are burning, stinging, mild irritation and redness. More severe reactions include allergic reactions such as hives or difficulty breathing, severe and persistent itching or skin irritation, and discoloration of the skin.]

Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate [ IPBC is a suspected gastrointestinal and liver toxin, and is thought to present risks to human reproduction and development, having been linked to the potential for reduced fertility and increased risk of pregnancy problems. It’s a suspected teratogen, which means that it may increase the risk of birth defects. It is banned in Japan]

Doesn’t this just make you sick? It’s bad enough our babies bottoms are getting wiped with this junk but what if your babies like to suck on wipes with any chance they get…yes my children are strange ha-ha. Those toxic ingredients are being ingested?! Ew

I hope you find this list helpful to decide which toxic free baby products you will start using 🙂

My 3 laundry hacks for a family of six

Dear Mama,

Let me explain my past mornings to you…I wake up feeling half dead but I drag myself out of bed anyway. I put on a sweater, and the word coffee begins to flash in my mind. I think to myself, yes…coffee, then I can manage this day. As I walk down my hallway, I see about five laundry baskets overflowing of dirty laundry, and four baskets ready to be folded and put away. Now at this point, I am literally ready to turn around and go back to bed and cry myself to sleep. Which in all honesty I HAVE done!
Here is what I have come to realize…children do not care if their clothes are wrinkle free. They do not care if their clothes are nicely folded and organized in their drawers. My husband feels the same as my children, no comment… so on that note! I began a new [laundry system] to save my sanity…so read on mama and come to the lazy side of laundry.

Big family laundry 2

1. Separate laundry in each room with your own empty basket.
Let’s say this load you are doing is “darks”. You have an empty laundry basket on your hip. You walk into you daughters room. Grab out her darks. You go into your son’s room, and grab out his darks. The reason I don’t grab all of the baskets and bring them all to the laundry room is because it creates buildup of laundry and tends to overwhelm me. Once I am overwhelmed, I give up and BAM! Mountains of laundry for weeks! YUCK

big family Laundry 1

2. Clean laundry baskets for each family member.
Once your laundry is dry, you will want to separate each family member’s clothes into their own little basket. I bought my baskets at Walmart for $3 each. So that’s a total of $18. Because each family member is putting away their own clothes. They can decide if they would like their clothes to be [wrinkle free] or not. My oldest daughter puts away her twin baby sister’s clothes to help me out as well. I fold my own clothes and other laundry that goes into the linen closet. Because I LIKE my things wrinkle free and [organized] ha-ha! Call me crazy!

Big family laundry 5

3. Re-wear your clothing.
When I decided I needed a change in my laundry routine, I also began teaching my oldest daughter to re-wear her clothes if they are not dirty. Granted, children become filthy from playing. I took the time to teach her why I need less laundry to clean. Kids thrive on explanations! She took it to heart and now she usually wears her clothes two days straight unless they are disgusting. Obviously my other 3 children are not able to do this because the twins are babies and they are dirty within an hour and my disabled son is pretty much half naked all day (it’s a sensory issue).

These hacks have helped me tremendously! It gives me more time to actually WASH the laundry and more time for the other millions of chores I have to get done throughout the day. Did I say I have a big family?! ha-ha! Hope these hacks help you lighten your load a bit- pun intended! 😉

Until next time…

Karissa

What is the point of this?

Dear Mama,

Like you I am a mom. Which sounds vague, because being a mom means so many different things. Being a mom also requires you to be a referee, a janitor, a nurse, a chef, a teacher, and so many other things.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Karissa and I am a mom to four children total. My oldest is 7, her name is Lacie. Next comes my son who is 5. His name is Conner. He has special needs, which I will talk about a lot in my blog. And lastly I have my twin girls who are 14 months old. Their names are Paris and Zoe. We really should have named them DRAMA and INDEPENDENT.

I have been married to my best friend for a little over 8 years. I literally got married right out of high school. Like, the weekend after graduation! And no, it wasn’t because we were pregnant. More like because we were insane! But I wouldn’t have it any other way! We live in the country where it’s quiet as long as you don’t count my SCREAMING children. Our home is located in California. We have a small homestead, and when I say homestead, I mean “chickens”…. Pathetic! XD But we are trying!

What is the point of this whole Blog thing? Here’s the deal… I am a stay at home mom, but I get paid to care for my 24 hour care special needs son. Which has been a huge blessing for our family. Because it means I get to stay home with all of my children.  My husband Joel works Monday through Friday 7-3. Which are actually pretty good hours! But our goal is for him to eventually quit work all together. Stay home with me and the kids. I miss my husband every day when he is working. Something we love to do is travel, but we never have enough “days off” to go anywhere or enough money. Family time is very precious to us and lately it’s been pretty difficult. I feel a lot of people can relate…you just feel disconnected from one another. We are striving for a simpler life. So the POINT is, not only is writing a fun hobby for me but I am doing a trial run with blogging to truly see where it goes! In hopes of eventually my husband quitting work.

So sit back, drink your coffee, and while your babies are still in bed…browse my blogs in hopes of finding something you can relate to. Welcome mama!

Love always,

Karissa
